Biography
Brandy Masch grew up in Kitimat, BC, where her connection to the natural world began and continues to shape her work. Since earning her BFA from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2001, Brandy has developed a distinctive style, working primarily with acrylic gouache, ink, and watercolor to create intricate, surreal compositions that explore the delicate balance between humanity, animals, and nature.
Brandy's work often depicts detailed worlds supported on the backs of animals, invoking creation myths where animals bear the weight of entire ecosystems. Her pieces reflect a profound understanding that our world’s balance relies on the existence of each individual species. This idea echoes in many ancient myths, such as the Iroquois and Chinese stories of the world resting on the shell of a cosmic turtle. Through her art, Brandy invites viewers to reflect on this interdependence, recognizing that while humans need animals to survive, animals often don't need us in return. Her work encourages us to contemplate our role in maintaining the balance of our shared world.
More than whimsical fantasy, Brandy's work blends imagination with reality, evoking personal interpretations while addressing themes of biodiversity, coexistence, and human impact. Through intricate details and captivating compositions, she sparks conversations about the future of our planet and our place within it.
"My recent works focus on marine life and fragile ecosystems, highlighting the challenges these habitats face and the intricate balance that connects all living things. I aim to inspire awareness and dialogue about our role in protecting these environments."
When she’s not creating in her studio at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, Brandy enjoys hiking, gardening, and spending time with her two mischievous cats, Jack and Sara.
Her paintings are represented at Hambleton Galleries in Kelowna, BC, Canada.
